A Debtor to Mercy Alone

I have recently fallen in love with Augustus Toplady's hymn A Debtor to Mercy Alone. We never sing it at Redeemer because it doesn't have a great tune, but man, the words are awesome. I love the end: the saints in heaven are more happy than we here on this weary pilgrimage to the Land, but they are not more secure than we! Oh! Precious, precious promises to sin-sick pilgrims longing for the day.

A Debtor to Mercy Alone
by Augustus M. Toplady

A debtor to mercy alone, of covenant mercy I sing;
Nor fear, with Thy righteousness on, my person and off’ring to bring.
The terrors of law and of God with me can have nothing to do;
My Savior’s obedience and blood hide all my transgressions from view.

The work which His goodness began, the arm of His strength will complete;
His promise is Yea and Amen, and never was forfeited yet.
Things future, nor things that are now, nor all things below or above,
Can make Him His purpose forgo, or sever my soul from His love.

My name from the palms of His hands eternity will not erase;
Impressed on His heart it remains, in marks of indelible grace.
Yes, I to the end shall endure, as sure as the earnest is giv’n;
More happy, but not more secure, the glorified spirits in Heav’n.

This is one of my favourite hymns. I happen to like the tune. But, for worship it might not go over so well. We should write a new one. Maybe I'll get one of the sacred music majors or composition majors to do it. : )

I was looking at the tune again and it's actually not bad. We just need to get Redeemer to learn it and then we'll be golden! SWEET! Hey, thought: we should sing this at the Greenville Conference. Oh, that would be awesome! I would be a PUDDLE!! Serious. A PUDDLE!

fyi...if Redeemer has the same ideas about hymns as Grace...people aren't going to like the tune. I happen to love it...and despite what some might say...the range is the same, if not better than, Be Thou My Vision, or How Sweet and Awesome is the Place

Redeemer is WAY open to learning new hymns, it'll just take some practice and that can be brutal in the middle of worship. But I think it's worth it. It's not a hard tune, just unfamiliar. I'll have to work on this... Come on Redeemer, we can do this! We can totally do this :)

I might just pick it on Sunday night...

Wow, I don't think I've heard of that hymn before, but it is certainly now one of my favorites! The tune isn't all that bad, either. I'm hoping to make it to the Greenville Conference, so yes, I think it should be sung there! ;-)

Ha ha... Have you heard the hymn Soul, Adorn Yourself With Gladness? A Debtor to Mercy Alone goes well with that tune, also. Pretty much the only other tune I've found that fits. I like it either way. Good stuff!
